We're having more and more conversations with organizations that need to transition from SharePoint 2013 Workflows and Nintex On-Premise.
It's with this in mind that I write this blog to support organizations on the lookout for an alternative solution to Microsoft SharePoint 2013 Workflows and Nintex On-Premise.
Below you'll find details regarding key dates, recommended next steps and what makes FlowForma Process Automation an ideal alternative.
Technology moves fast, sometimes it can be difficult to keep track of updates and products in your ecosystem going end of life. In 2020 we saw SharePoint 2010 Workflows being retired by Microsoft and in April 2026 we'll see SharePoint 2013 workflows become end of life.
SharePoint 2010 Workflows → Retired in August 2020
SharePoint 2013 Workflows → End of life: April 2, 2026
It basically means both these built-in workflow engines for SharePoint and 3rd party vendor products such as Nintex On-Premise will no longer be supported by Microsoft, potential security risks and a lack of updates will make them unsustainable for businesses. As a result, organizations are needing to transition to a modern alternative.
You may be using a product like Nintex On-Premise which depends on SharePoint 2013 Workflows as its workflow engine, Nintex will only make support available to you until December 2025.
From talking to people in the position of needing to find alternatives, many are acting fast. If you've hundreds or thousands of Nintex workflows running on a workflow engine that is going end of life, migrating to a new platform will take thorough planning.
SharePoint 2013 Workflows end on April 2, 2026 – after this date, they will no longer function in Microsoft 365
Nintex On-Premise will remain supported until their anticipated end-of-support date in December 2025
Security risks will increase as unsupported workflows won’t receive patches or updates
Migrating to Nintex Cloud isn’t a direct lift-and-shift, you have to rebuild workflows from scratch
Licensing costs for Nintex Cloud are much higher, meaning organizations are reconsidering their automation vendors and strategies
FlowForma offers a faster, more cost-effective, no-code alternative (powered by AI)
You'll want to create a project plan with timelines detailing: a) what date you need to audit all your workflows by, b) when you'll have your processes categorized by importance, c) you'll also need a buffer from before April 2026 that you'll want everything live and tested in your new chosen platform.
